Pittore e insegnante d'arte.
Figura centrale del primo Bauhaus.
Nacque a Süderen-Linden (Svizzera)
nel 1888. Nel 1913 frequentò l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Stoccarda.
La sua prima mostra personale fu del 1916 a Berlino, presso la Galleria
Der Sturm, città nella quale cominciò ad interessarsi di filosofia
orientale. Dal 1919 al 1923 insegnò al BAUHAUS: fu docente del corso
propedeutico (da lui stesso ideato) e di "teoria della forma".
Nel 1920 si avvicinò alla setta Mazdaznan, della quale diffuse le
idee all'interno dello stesso Bauhaus. Nel 1926 aprì a Berlino una
scuola d'arte moderna la "Ittenschule". Dal 1932 al '38 diresse
una scuola tessile a Krefeld; in seguito e fino al 1953 diresse una scuola-museo
a Zurigo di artigianato artistico. Dal 1950 al '56 fu allestitore e direttore
del Museo Rietberg di Zurigo.
Morì a Zurigo nel 1967.

Born in Süderen-Linden (Switzerland)
in 1888. In 1913 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart.
His first personal exhibition was in 1916 at the Der Sturm Gallery in Berlin,
city in which he began to follow oriental philosophy. From 1919 to 1923
he taught at the BAUHAUS: he taught propaedeutics (a course created by
himself) and the "shape theory". In 1920 he started following
the Mazdaznan sect, the ideas of which he diffused within the same Bauhaus.
In 1926, he opened a modern art school in Berlin "Ittenschule".
From 1932 to 1938, he directed a textile school in Krefeld; afterwards,
and up until 1953, he directed a museum-school in Zurich for artistic handicraft.
Since 1950 to 1956, he was designer and director of the Rietberg Museum
of Zurich.
He died in Zurich in 1967. |
